At the Lotus feet of my Guru, I first cleanse the mirror of my heart and consciousness, and then proceed to profess the holy, purest glory of the Great Lord Shri Raam Chandra, the Supreme amongst the Raghu dynasty, He who bestows on us the four-fold attainments of Life : ie Kama (peasure), Artha (wealth), Dharma (religious merit) and Mokhsa (salvation)

You know that I am ignorant, and I beseech you (Lord Hanuman), O son of the God of Wind Pavan! Please bless me with Strength, Wisdom and Knowledge, and take away all my blemishes and imperfections which cause me much pain.

kumait inavaar saumait ko saMgaI ku-mati ni-vaar su-mati ke sang-gi

O bravest of the brave, O powerful Lord! With you rests good sense and wisdom. You are the true dispeller of the darkness of evil thoughts!

Your clothes are golden-hued, and your physique is powerful and strong! Your ear studs and your curly hair are ever so pleasing to behold!

kaMQaO maUja janao} saajaO kaan-dhay mooj janay-oo saa-jay

In your hands you hold the Vajra (the powerful mace of the God Indra), and also a flag of victory! Around your shoulders, draped beautifully, is the sacred thread of Hinduism, the jan-ay-oo!

You are always keen and eager to listen with supreme devotion to the engrossing and inspiring stories of the Life of Shree Ram, and this is why in your heart dwell Shree Ram, Mother Seeta and Lakshmanji! (and you dwell in their hearts)

When you revealed your presence to the distraught Mother Seeta (who had been kidnapped by the Ravan), you presented your meekest avatar (of a devoted humble servant), but when you accosted the enemy, you assumed gigantic, demonic proportions and burnt down all of Ravans Lanka!

BaIma rUp Qair Asaur saMharo Bhim roop dha-ree a-sur san-ghaa-ray

ramacaMd ko kaja sa^Mvaaro Raam Chan-dra kay kaaj san-vaa-ray

With overwhelming and all-crushing might you destroyed every demon (asura), thus fulfilling your Lord Ram Chandraji s mission.

laaya saMjaIvana laKna ijayaae laa-ye san-jee-van La-khan ji-yaa-ay

EaI rGaubaIr hrYaI ]r laae Shree Ra-ghu-beer ha-ra-shi ura laa-ay

When Lakshman lay dying, you brought the life-saving herb Sanjivni (a nectarine herb said to revive the dead) and revived him! Overcome with happiness, Shree Ram clasped you in a happy embrace!

rGaupit kInhI bahut baZ,a[- Ra-ghu-pati keen-hee ba-hut ba-dhaa-ee

tuma mama ipya Bartih sama Baa[- tum mum pree-ya Bha-rata-hi sa-ma bhaa-ee

and He showered fulsome praise on you, saying "You are dear to Me exactly like My younger brother Bharat!"

sahsa badna tumhrao jasa gaavaOM sa-has ba-dan tu-mha-ro jas gaa-va-ay

Asa kih EaIpit kMz lagaavaOM uss ka-hi Shree-pati kann-tth la-gaa-way

"Thousands of grateful people / living creatures are singing your fulsome praise!" and so saying, the lord of Lakshmi Shree Ram embraced Lord Hanuman. (Another interpretation of these two lines: "Even the thousand-hooded divine serpent, the mighty Sheshnaag, who carries the weight of the Earth on His numerous hoods, is singing praises of you, O Hanuman!" said Lord Ram, the Lord of Lakshmi, and so saying, He embraced Hanumanji.)

naard saard saiht AhIsaa Naa-rad saa-rad sa-hit ahee-sa

And apart from Sheshaag, the great saint Saanak, and Gods like the Lord of Creation Brahma, and the great sage Narad and the Goddess of knowledge, Sarasawati (Sarada) and He of immense dimensions, Ahisha, and several other sages perpetually sing your praise!

kiba kaoibad kih sako khaM^ to ka-bi ko-bid ka-hi sa-kay ka-haan tay

When the Lord of Death, Yama, the Lord of Wealth, Kuber, and the Digpals, ie the deputies guarding the four corners of the Universe, are vying with one another to outdo one another in singing your praise, how can a humble poet like me (Tulsidas) do justice to singing about Your greatness?

rama imalaaya raja pd dInha Raam mi-laa-ay raaj-pad deen-ha

To Sugriv, the brother of Bali, you rendered a great service by bringing him into Shree Rams fold. Thanks to Shree Rams blessings and help, Sugriv managed to regain his throne and the glory that came with it.

tumhrao maMt ivaBaIYana maanaa tum-ha-row man-tra Vi-bhee-shan maa-naa

laMkoXvar Bae saba jaga jaanaa Lank-esh-war bha-ya sab jag jaa-naa

And as a result of paying heed to Your advice, Vibhishan, the brother of Ravan, became the King of Lanka (after Ravans death at the hands of Shree Ram) , as is known throughout the world.

laIlyaao taih maQaur fla jaanaU lee-li-yo taa-he ma-dhur fal jaa-noo

When You were a child (O Lord Hanuman) You had thought that the mighty Sun, burning fiercely millions of miles away, was a little fruit, and You had reached out, plucked it from the Heavens and put it in your mouth swallowed it!

Keeping Lord Rams ring in Your mouth, You conquered the mighty Ocean (separating India and Lanka) with ultimate ease when You went in search of Mother Sita.

duga-ma kaja jagat ko jaoto dur-gum kaaj ja-gat ke jay-tay

saugama Anaugah tumhro to to su-gaum a-noo-gra-ha tum-ha-ray tay tay

Every difficult and seemingly insurmountable obstacle and impediment in life can be easily overcome with Your grace and benevolence.

rama duAaro tuma rKvaaro Raam du-aa-ray tum ra-kha-waa-ray

haot na Aa&a ibanau pOsaaro hot-a na aa-gyaa bi-nu pa-ay-saa-ray

You are the sentinel of Lord Ram, and no one can ever dare enter Lord Rams abode without Your permission.

saba sauK lahO tumharI sarnaa sab sukh le-hay tum-haa-ree sa-ra-naa

tuma rcCk kahU kao Dr naa tum ra-chhak kaa-hoo ko dar-a-na

When one is under your graceful benevolence, one attains every comfort and happiness! With You as my protector, O Lord Hanuman, what have I to fear? Nothing!

Aapna toja samharao AapO aa-pan tej sam-haa-ro aa-pay

tInaao laaok haM^k tMo kaM^pO tee-no lowk haan-k te kaan-pay

Only You can control Your own might O Lord Hanuman! When you emit a roar, all three worlds tremble (with its reverberance and their own fear).

BaUt ipsaaca inakT naihM AavaO bhoot pi-saa-ch ni-kat na-hin aa-way

mahabaIr jaba naama saunaavaO Ma-ha-beer jab naam su-naa-way

No evil spirits can ever trouble your devotees who chant your name, O Mahabir (Bravest of the brave)! All the ghosts and evil spirits shy away in terror at the sheer mention of your name, O Mahavir!

naasaO raoga hrO saba pIra naa-say roag her-ay sab pee-raa

japt inarMtr hnaumat baIra ja-pat ni-run-tar Ha-noo-mat bee-ra

All disease and misery vanish from his life who constantly chants your holy Name, O Lord Hanuman!

saMkT toM hnaumaana CuD,avaO san-katt tay Ha-nu-man chhu-rdaa-way

mana kma bacana Qyaana jaao laavaO mann kram ba-chan dhi-yaan jo laa-way

Lord Hanuman rescues from all trouble and danger, those who sincerely, devoutly and with faith, remember and chant His holy Name.

itna ko kaja sakla tuma saajaa tinn kay kaaj sa-kal tum saa-jaa

You make easy each and every difficult task of all those who worship and hail Lord Ram as the Supreme God (who underwent the most rigorous penance). You remove all obstacles from the lives of the devoted worshippers of Lord Ram.

AaOr manaaorqa jaao kao[- laavaO Orr ma-no-rath jo ko-ee laa-way

saao[- Aimat jaIvana fla pavaO so-i a-mit jee-van fal paa-ay

Whoever comes to You for fruition of any desires, will secure the imperishable fruit of human life.

caaraoM jauga prtap tumhara chaa-ron yug par-taap tum-haa-raa

hO prisaw jagat ]ijayaara hai par-siddh ja-gat uji-yaara

O Lord Hanuman, Your glory is spread across all four Yugas, and your radiance is acclaimed and praised across the entire cosmos! (The four yugas are: Sat Yug, Dwapar Yug, Treta Yug and Kal Yug, in that order.)

saaQau saMt ko tuma rKvaaro saa-dhu sant kay tum rakh-waaray

Asaur inakMdna rama dulaaro a-sur ni-kan-dan raam du-laa-ray

O Lord Hanuman, You are the protector of all holy people and saints. You are the fierce destroyer and slayer of all demons. You are the darling of Shree Ram, who loves you with utmost indulgence, with all His heart!

AYT isawI naaO inaiQa ko data asht sid-dhi nau ni-dhi kay daa-taa

Asa bar dIna jaanakI maata uss var deen jaan-ki maa-taa

Mother Janki has blessed you with the power to bestow on your devotees eight Siddhis (power to become light and heavy at will) and Nine Nidhis (comfort, wealth, prestige, power, happy relationships, fame, etc.)

rama rsaayana tumhro pasaa Raam ra-saa-yan tum-ha-ray paa-saa

sada rahao rGaupit ko dasaa sa-daa ra-ho Ra-ghu-pati ke daa-saa

The worship of Lord Raam is a divine ambrosia that You have, and for ever and ever will You remain the humble and devoted servant of Raghupati, (another name for Lord Raam).

tumhro Bajana rama kao pavaO tum-ha-ray bha-jan Raam ko paa-vay

janama janama ko duK ibasaravaO ja-nam ja-nam ke dukh biss-raa-vay

By chanting Your name, one can reach Lord Raam and find relief from the pain of several rebirths.

Ant kala raGaubar pur jaa[- anth kaal Ra-ghu-bar-pur jaa-ee

jahaM^ janama hair Ba@t kha[- ja-haan ja-nam Ha-ri bhak-t ka-haa-ee

Ultimately, such a devotee reaches the abode of Lord Raam Himself, where he remains a devout worshipper of Lord Raam, and thereafter, in every birth, he is reborn as a true devotee of Lord Raam.

hnaumat sao[- saba- sauK kr[- Ha-nu-mat say-ee sa-rab sukh ka-ra-ee

There is no need to remember any other deity for propitiation, as the name of Lord Hanuman alone can give all happiness. (Another meaning: The other deities may not really care about their devotees, but the name of Lord Hanuman gives all happiness)

saMkT kTO imaTO saba pIra san-kat ka-tay mi-tay sab pee-raa

jaao sauimarO hnaumat balabaIra jo su-mi-ray Ha-nu-mat bal-bee-raa

Every danger is overcome, every pain is alleviated and removed for him who worships Lord Hanuman devoutly.

jaO jaO jaO hnaumaana gaaosaa[-M jai jai jai Ha-nu-man go-saa-een

kRpa krhu gaurudova kI naa[-M kri-paa ka-ra-hu Gu-ru-dev ki naa-een

Hail, Lord Hanuman, may Your victory over evil be total and final. I beg you to be compassionate and indulgent towards me in the form of my Supreme Teacher and Guide.

CuTih baMid maha sauK hao[- chhoo-ta-hi ban-di ma-ha sukh ho-ee

He who devoutly reads this prayer a hundred times will find freedom from the bondage of Life and Death, and will ultimately enjoy the highest form of bliss!

haoya isaiw saaKI gaaOrIsaa ho-yay sid-dhi saa-khee gau-ree-saa

He who recites the Hanuman Chalisa (all Forty Chaupais) is certain to overcome all troubles and attain happiness. This is witnessed by as great a God as Lord Shankar Himself.

tulasaIdasa sada hir caora Tu-la-si-das sa-da Ha-ri che-ra

kIjaO naaqa hRdya maM^h Dora kee-jay Naa-th hri-day-a mein day-raa

Tulsidas (the writer of these verses) is an eternal devotee of Lord Hari, and prays to Lord Hanuman to kindly live in his heart for ever and ever.
